A day in Mis bush

I spent a day in the bush in Mis with the primary goal of collecting some galls for a rearing experiment. As usual, I sweated buckets much to the amusement of my guides - a local guy, his sister, and a kid.

First, some critters: weevil, jumping spider, cricket, spider

The boy, Matoueh, full of beans, and a village kid.

Back in the village relaxing. From right (Matoueh, Kenson, Mata - my guides)

Butch Cassowary & the Sundance Kidz

People have been complaining that their lives are hollow and meaningless when my blog is not frequently updated. Thus this.

This is Florence, our weekday cook, with a large fish that we haven't eaten yet. Note reddened teeth from betel nut chewing.

A one-eyed cassowary (some kids shot the other one out) reared from chick by a local. A freshly caught squid or cuttlefish [actually, judging by the lack of 2 longer tentacles, I'm pretty sure its a cuttlefish].

View across the harbour (again!!). Our canoe with one of our guys, Sentiko, at the front

The cuttlefisherman. Ze Kidz!

Some Ants

Here I am chilling out in haus win - the house that lets wind in through its open sides - accompanied by the other resident dog, Nanug (a local language meaning for dog. Mangi is Pidgin for dog! And Kokomo is Pidgin for hornbill!)

These ants are everywhere in the garden - they are not averse to nipping you everywhere either

Nipping out for a beer

Paddling across Nagada Harbour to go for a few beers to a resort called Jais Aben, which means peaceful place.

I haven't learnt much Pidgen (Tok Pisin) yet, but my favourite word is definitely buggerup, which means broken, ruined, etc!!

A talking cockatoo!

Legi, a parataxonomist at the centre, Katka, a Czech PhD student, and some bottles of SP ale

Around Nagada & Baitabag

Coconut Palms; at the mouth of the harbour

Dragonfly!

Rusting axle; kids playing in a village we stumbled upon; bus shell
