Tour pt6: Egmont National Park

Days 9: A little relaxation, a drive to Stratford (inc. essential purchasing of fancy dress items for later). Finally, a 1.5 hours arduous climbing up steps to Kapuni Lodge hut on Mt. Taranaki (aka Mt. Egmont).

Taking tiffin in a nice cafe (note custard slice). The clock at Stratford.

Mt. Taranaki

Lovely goblin forest near Dawson Falls visitor centre.

Fantham's Peak peaking through the pea soup - our destination for the next day.

Sunset at Kapuni Lodge with Taranaki in the background.

Playing uno... and it is revealed what we secretly bought for each other. So nice to be back in a dress.

Day 10: up pre-dawn to catch sunrise at Fantham's Peak at 1966 m. Named after 19 year-old Fanny Fantham, the first European woman to climb the peak in 1887.

On the horizon, Mts. Ngauruhoe (or, if you still like children's stories, Mt. Doom) and Ruapehu could be seen.

We didn't quite make Fantham's Peak for the sun, but it was awesome nonetheless. Syme hut.

Fantham's Peak (left) and Bob's Knob (right).

Descending beneath Fantham's Peak.

Exhausting but fantastic. That was it. A long drive to Wellington remained. And hot water and a gorgeous Italian meal and some beers and some silly dancing. And saying goodbye to some people. Thanks again to our unique guide, Kath, who was utterly brilliant!

Amazing photos, superb views, you must be as fit as a fiddle! The Goblin forest must be in the cloud zone? We saw similar around the 9000 foot level when we climbed Mount Kinabalu in Sabah. I don't think the dress colour suits you , something in more muted shades would be better.....
